Internet Explorer 6 implementation strategy

This document describes the strategy for implementing SynchroEdit on the current release of Internet Explorer (version 6).

The current implementation of SynchroEdit is based on the W3C mutation-events standard (documented here) which Internet Explorer 6 does not and will never support.

Thus, it will most likely be necessary to write an ActiveX component or similar using the .NET framework as an Explorer 6-only solution. We have had some experience doing in the past at Skotos with the Alice chat client.

There are some other open source ActiveX implementations out there which may prove useful in this project (e.g. this project's essock).

Depending on the outcome of Internet Explorer 7, this may be the single solution for the Explorer browser.
